Contest rules
A contest is a timed event several players enter at once. This is how one works, start to finish.
Entering
- Entry is in coins. It comes out of your balance when you join and is held until the contest settles.
- There is no cash entry and no cash prize. Coins are a token inside ScaleUp: they cannot be bought, sold or cashed out, and a contest never turns them into money.
- Leaving before entry closes returns your entry in full.
Who may enter
- You have finished calibration, so the product knows how you play.
- The contest is open to your camp. Its own screen says which camps those are.
- Nothing about how you play is open for review. If the fairness check has opened something on your seat, you can enter again once a person has settled it.
How it is decided
Everybody answers the same questions, in the same order, under the same clock. Places are decided by how the answers were marked. A tie goes to whoever finished sooner, and if that is equal too, by a fixed rule neither player controls.
The pot, our share, and the ladder
Every entry goes into one pot. We take a share of that pot, and the contest's own screen names the percentage before you join.
What is left is paid to the top ten finishers, in these shares:
1. 40 per cent 2. 25 per cent 3. 15 per cent 4. 6 per cent 5. 4 per cent 6. 3 per cent 7. 3 per cent 8. 2 per cent 9. 1 per cent 10. 1 per cent
A contest that ends with fewer than ten finishers pays the places that exist, in the same order. The shares of the places nobody reached are simply not paid. They are not spread across the finishers, and nobody is paid a share for a place they did not take.
When an entry or a contest is set aside
- An entry set aside for review is refunded in full, and a person looks at what the check found. You are told either way.
- A void contest returns every entry in full. A contest is void when too few players entered, when a fault on our side stops it, or when we have closed contests for a while. Nobody wins and nobody is out of pocket.
- A settled contest is not re-ranked. Once it has paid out, the places stand. A question in it that is later found to be wrong is put right in the question itself and in the Score, never by re-running a contest people have already been paid for.
